Canada: Husky’s SeaRose FPSO Catches Fire

The C-NLOPB, a regulator that manages the petroleum resources in the Newfoundland offshore area on behalf of the Federal and Provincial governments received a report of a small fire that occurred in Power Generator C onboard the Husky Energy operated SeaRose FPSO on May 3, 2012.

Personnel on the SeaRose observed smoke and a small fire within the enclosure through a view porthole. The unit was shut down and the fire suppression system immediately extinguished the fire.

A general platform alarm was sounded and all personnel were mustered. No personnel were injured. Systems and operations have returned to normal with an investigation into the incident ongoing by Husky Energy.

Canada’s largest energy company, Husky Energy, uses the SeaRose FPSO at its White Rose offshore field, located in the Jeanne d’Arc basin in the North Atlantic Ocean. The company recently reported that the  vessel would begin its offstation program in May. The entire program, including disconnect, dry dock and reconnecting activities, is expected to last approximately 125 days.

Husky Energy’s spokesperson Colleen McConnell told Reuters that the scheduled shutdown of production was not hampered by the fire. “We are in the process today of shutting in wells,” Reuters quoted McConnel as saying.
