CargoSmart: Carriers’ Reliability Climbs in June 2018

Ocean carriers’ schedule reliability increased by 6.6% to 69.3% in June 2018, rising from 62.7% witnessed in May 2018, according to a report from intelligence provider CargoSmart.

Reviewing schedule reliability by trade, two of the 13 trades decreased from May 2018 to June 2018. The Europe-Africa trade experienced the largest decrement in reliability, dropping by 15.6% from 60% in May 2018 to 44.4% in June 2018.

The Europe-Oceania trade experienced the largest improvement in reliability, surging by 24.2%, from 47.4% in May 2018 to 71.6% in June 2018, while the Europe-Middle East trade succeeded in maintaining the highest reliability among the 13 trades.

From the vessel discharging region perspective, the Africa region had the largest decrement in reliability, decreasing by 16.7%, from 64% in May 2018 to 47.3% in June 2018, which was also the region with the lowest reliability. The Middle East region had the highest reliability, with 77.8% reliability in June 2018.

Out of 22 carrier, 21 experienced varying degrees of increasing schedule reliability from May 2018 to June 2018. The top five most reliable carriers in June 2018 were MCC, OOCL, Safmarine, CMA CGM and ANL with an average on-time performance of 82.6%, 78%, 76.9%, 74.9%, and 74.3% respectively.

Taking a look back at the second quarter of 2018, the overall schedule reliability increased slightly from 60.7% in April to 62.7% in May, and then went up to 69.3% in June. Compared to the same period last year, the reliability continued to increase from 58.6% in April 2017 to 70.1% in June 2017.

Reviewing the schedule reliability by carrier and the top five most reliable carriers in the second quarter of 2017 and 2018, MCC and Safmarine were at the top of both lists. MCC had the highest monthly average reliability of 79.4% in Q2 2017 and went down to 73% in Q2 2018. Safmarine had an average reliability of 73.1% in Q2 2017 and increased to 74.6% in Q2 2018.

CMA CGM was in the fifth place in 2017 and went up to the fourth place in 2018 with an average reliability of 69.2% in Q2 2017 and 70.3% in Q2 2018. OOCL and ANL were new to the top five list this year with 70.6% and 69.5% reliability in Q2 2018.
