Chennai Port Project: Adani or Essar (India)

According to Business Line, the ‘build, own and transfer’ project, which is to take place at Chennai port will soon have its winner.

The estimated value of the biggest container terminal projects outside Gujarat is Rs 3,700-crore.

When it comes to the project details, it is said that the port trust is to cover the cost of dredging, floating crafts and navigational aids, amounting to Rs 561 crore.

On the other hand, the private operator is expected to invest Rs 3,125 crore in berth and breakwater construction, reclamation of backup area, handling equipment and other necessary landside infrastructure.

The terminal, which is to be located north of the existing Bharathi Dock encompasses a total length of 4.5 km. It will have two new breakwaters and a 2 km long continuous quay. The alongside depth of the quay will cover 22-metre, where ultra-large container ships of over 15,000 20-foot equivalent unit capacity and 400 metres long will be handled.

Two Indian conglomerates, Adani Ports and Essar Ports are the sole bidders for the project .
