China’s imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) surged in January as the country continued its switch from coal to natural gas as fuel for heating and to meet the expected demand spike due to a cold snap this month.

China imported 5.18 million tonnes of LNG, up 51.2 percent from January 2017 and higher than the previous record of 5.03 million tonnes set in December, according to the General Administration of Customs data.

Australia is China’s biggest LNG supplier, however, China also took volumes in January from places such as Norway, Nigeria and Angola.

To remind, China took over South Korea as the world’s second-largest LNG importer last year.
