Crewman Evacuated from Chembulk Tanker off San Diego

A 48-year-old crewman was evacuated from the tanker Chembulk New York on August 28 while the vessel was some 290 miles southwest of Point Loma, San Diego.

According to details provided by the United States Coast Guard, the crew of the 525-foot tanker contacted Coast Guard Sector San Diego’s Joint Harbor Operations Center watchstanders at around 4:15 p.m. on Monday, requesting assistance for the crew member, who was experiencing symptoms of a heart attack.

At the time of the report, the vessel was 370 miles southwest of San Diego. The vessel adjusted course toward San Diego to facilitate the medevac.

An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew was sent to assist. The helicopter arrived on the scene and hoisted the man at around 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

The crewman was transferred to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla. He was reported to be in stable condition.

The 2002-built Chembulk New York, which features 27,285 dwt, is owned by Chembulk Tankers and managed by V.Ships Asia Group.
