Deep Sea Minerals to Become Important Asset for Asia Pacific

The head of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community claims deep sea minerals will become an increasingly important asset to a region beset by challenges.

SPC developed a legislative framework on deep sea mining, designed to be used as a manual for Pacific countries with sea floor mineral resources.

Those who would likely become affected by extractive work have criticised the framework for not providing sufficient protection to them.

The SPC head said that undersea minerals could become a very important commodity in the Asia Pacific region.

Dr Jimmie Rodgers states that the mining industry is a very effective reception group and the SPC is there to guide Pacific governments on policy.
