DeMaCo to Build LNG Transferlines for Skangass (Norway)

DeMaCo, the Dutch specialist in cryogenic infrastructures, has acquired an order to build the LNG transferlines for a ferry bunker system operated by Skangass.

The system will be realized in the Norwegian port of Risavika, near Stavanger. DeMaCo’s direct client is Cryonorm Systems from Alphen aan den Rijn, which is also a Dutch company. Cryonorm Systems is the main contractor for installing this comprehensive bunker system. DeMaCo will bring its cryogenic expertise (the company itself refers to ‘cryogenius’) to the project and will be responsible for engineering, producing and installing vacuum-isolated transferlines within the LNG bunker system. DeMaCo and Cryonorm Systems will be setting up the system for Skangass to facilitate the loading of ferries that sail between Norway and Denmark. These ferries use LNG as fuel for their propulsion systems.

Before the end of 2013, DeMaCo will supply and install approx. three quarters of a kilometre of transferlines in Norway. DeMaCo’s solutions for Skangass demonstrate ‘cryogenius’ because the proposed transferlines are safer (being double-walled) and more sustainable than traditionally insulated LNG transferlines. Although the vacuum-insulated space between the process pipeline and the outer housing is only 1″, the DeMaCo installation boasts superior insulation values, up to thirty times better than the values of traditional insulated systems. Consequently, the energy that is used to liquidize natural gas is used much more efficiently.

In addition, installation times of the DeMaCo pipelines are substantially shorter than those of traditionally insulated systems, because much more use is made of pre-fabricated sections.

DeMaCo is located in Noord-Scharwoude in The Netherlands and has specialised for more than twenty-five years in designing, building, testing and installing pipeline systems as well as measurement and control engineering tailored to extremely low temperatures (cryogenics) and extremely low pressures (vacuum technology). In addition to facilitating the LNG business, DeMaCo also serves producers of industrial gases and end-users of liquid gas, including the foodstuff industry, and pharmaceutical, automotive, aerospace and medical companies. Furthermore, DeMaCo has specialized in complex liquid helium systems, which are frequently used by scientific institutions.
