Denmark: Anholt Offshore Wind Farm in Legoland

Denmark: Anholt Offshore Wind Farm in Legoland

Ambitions are high in DONG Energy when it comes to renewable energy. At the moment, the energy company is constructing Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm between Grenaa and the island of Anholt in the Kattegat. The first LEGO bricks for the Anholt Offshore Wind Farm have now been laid in LEGOLAND®, where both adults and kids can see a miniature version of the offshore wind turbines first hand and hear the story about Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm.

Denmark is at the forefront within renewable energy, and with the erection of Anholt Offshore Wind Farm, which DONG Energy owns together with PensionDanmark and PKA Pension, this leading position becomes even stronger. As market leader within offshore wind, DONG Energy has erected a large part of the world’s largest offshore wind farms, and with Anholt Offshore Wind Farm, which DONG Energy expects to be completed in the autumn of 2013, the energy company can add yet another offshore wind farm to its portfolio.

CO2-free electricity for 400,000 households

Anholt Offshore Wind Farm will not only become Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm, but also one of the world’s largest wind farms. With its 111 wind turbines, the wind farm will make a significant contribution to meeting Denmark’s objective of ensuring that the share of renewable energy reaches more than 35% by 2020. Anholt Offshore Wind Farm will have a total capacity of 400MW and will be able to cover the annual power consumption of 400,000 Danish households by means of CO2-free electricity, which corresponds to 4% of Denmark’s total power consumption.

The wind farm will be approximately 20km long and up to 5km wide, and the chosen layout of the wind farm covers an area of 88km2 within a total area of 144km2. By erecting the wind turbines at the best possible position in terms of wind exposure, it ensures optimum production at Anholt Offshore Wind Farm.

LEGOLAND® gets its own offshore wind farm

In LEGOLAND®, Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm first hand can be seen – in a miniature version. In 2008, DONG Energy and LEGOLAND® opened the energy universe “Energien i Danmark” (Energy in Denmark). This year, the parties are working hard to lay the first LEGO bricks for a miniature version of a small section of the offshore wind farm in the scale 1:20.

The construction of the offshore wind farm in LEGOLAND® follows the same pattern as the construction of the actual wind farm, so little by little the LEGO model in Miniland becomes more and more complete. The area with a total of seven wind turbines will be completed in autumn 2013, when the actual Anholt Offshore Wind Farm will also be completed. The area includes an information stand that gives the guests information on the offshore wind farm project.

DONG Energy supports the fact that LEGOLAND ® once again wants to combine fun rides and LEGO models with educational features. ”Playing and learning go together, and if we can teach our children about eco-friendly/sustainable energy through LEGO bricks, we hopefully reach someone that we wouldn’t have reached otherwise,” says Christina Grumstrup Sørensen, Senior Vice President in DONG Energy Wind Power.
