Denmark Goes from Third to Seventh Ranking on Port State Control White List

On the so-called White List for 2010 Denmark has gone from a third to a seventh ranking.

The list reflects the number of detentions of Danish ships in recent three years and, though Denmark recedes on the list, the figures reveal that only a few Danish ships are detained.

One of the indicators of quality shipping is a flag State’s ranking on the lists from the leading port State control regimes – the Paris MoU, the Tokyo MoU and the US Coast Guard.

Within the Paris MoU, Denmark is still among the top ten on the White List, but recedes from a third place in 2009 to a seventh place in 2010. The ranking on the list is calculated on the basis of the number of detentions in recent three years in relation to the number of inspections. The number of detained Danish ships in the period from 2008 to 2010 is the second-lowest ever in a 15-year period, but compared to other countries Denmark still has a low ranking.

Director General of the Danish Maritime Authority Andreas Nordseth is pleased that Denmark retains the top ten ranking, but does however consider the new ranking unfortunate:

“In the Danish Maritime Authority, we would like Denmark to rank at the top of the White List. This ranking is an important indicator of how good we are at quality shipping. It is not satisfactory that we recede from a third to a seventh place compared to developments in certain other countries. I am confident that the industry will, together with the Danish Maritime Authority, focus on returning to a top ranking. It is not only about being at the top of the list, but also about Danish ships constantly being characterised by high quality and no detentions.”

On the Tokyo MoU White List, Denmark gets a seventh ranking compared to an eight ranking in 2009. The US Coast Guard does not keep similar lists, but publishes an overview of flag States that comply with the American quality criteria (QUAL SHIP 21 – Quality shipping for the 21st century). Here, Denmark is also represented.
