Greek natural gas company, DEPA, on Thursday signed a memorandum of understanding with Attica Group to look into the possibility of using LNG as fuel for the latter’s fleet of passenger ships.

According to DEPA’s statement, the two companies will conduct a joint study of the parameters and conditions for the use of LNG as fuel for the Attica Group’s fleet.

Further development of cooperation will depend on the results of the study, DEPA said.

Attica Group, the parent company of the Superfast Ferries fleet and the Blue Star Ferries fleet totalling 12 ferries, and DEPA are both part of the Poseidon Med II project that aims to promote LNG as the main fuel for the shipping industry.

The interest in the use of LNG as fuel for shipping has grown since the recent decision by the International Maritime Organization Marine Environment Protection Committee to enforce the global 0.5 percent cap on the sulphur content of marine fuel by 2020.
