Elengy says its two LNG terminals back online after fire at Fos-sur-Mer

France’s Elengy, a unit of Engie, said Thursday its two LNG terminals in Fos-sur-Mer have restarted operations after a large fire ravaged land around the industrial zone located about 40km north-west of Marseille.

Multiple wild fires whipped by high winds broke out near Marseille in southern France on Wednesday scorching thousands of hectares of land, burning down homes and forcing the migration of thousands.

According to media reports, about 1,800 firefighters including many drafted in from elsewhere in France joined the major firefighting operation.

One of the fires affected the area around Fos-sur-Mer, located on the shores of the Mediterranean. Fos-sur-Mer is the home of Elengy’s two LNG terminals, namely the Fos Tonkin and Fos Cavaou terminals.

“A fire started around noon on Wednesday, August 9th in the Fos-sur-Mer industrial area and approached Elengy’s LNG terminals,” an Elengy spokeswoman told LNG World News on Thursday, adding that this led to an intervention by firefighters.

The fire affected power supply to both terminals forcing Elengy to shut down operations and stop send-out from the two facilities, according to the spokeswoman,

“This morning the situation is again under control and both terminals have restarted their operations,” she added.

Besides the two terminals in Fos-sur-Mer, Elengy operates the Montoir-de-Bretagne LNG terminal on the French Atlantic coast.

French LNG terminal operator currently has 19 million tons per annum of natural gas regasification capacity and 840,000 cbm of LNG storage capacity at its three terminals, according to its website.
