Finnish LNG-powered icebreaker begins sea trials

Arctech Helsinki Shipyard on Friday said that the Finnish LNG-powered icebreaker Polaris has set out to sea trials.

The sea trials are part of the test procedure that ensures the functionality of the vessel prior to the delivery, Arctech informed in its statement.

The vessel, designed for a 50-year service life is scheduled for delivery to its owner, Arctia Shipping, during winter of 2016.

The icebreaker will use both low sulphur diesel and LNG as its fuel and features ice-strengthened propulsion units and oil recovery system integrated into the hull.

The vessel will be used to assist other vessels in ice conditions, but the Polaris will also be able to perform oil spill response operations, emergency towing and rescue operations during the whole year.
