First Blyth Foundation in Place

The first gravity-based foundation (GBF) has been installed onto the sea bed for EDF Blyth wind farm project off the Northumberland coast, UK.

Earlier this month, the gravity base left BAM’s dry dock in Newcastle and was floated down the River Tyne to Port of Tyne to have additional ballast added to it prior the set up at the Blyth location.

The foundation design utilises ‘self-installing’ technology. The project is a demonstration project to prove the viability of this approach to installing gravity base foundations in the offshore environment for future wind farms.

The second GBF of five has now arrived at site, and it’s ready to be installed.

The new wind farm will have five wind turbines with a total generating capacity of 41.5M.
