Gaz-System sanctions expansion of Polish LNG terminal

Polish gas transmission operator, Gaz-System has taken additional steps to expand the President Lech Kaczynski LNG terminal in Swinoujscie.

The operator has already issued recommendations to its unit, Polskie LNG in regards to the terminal expansion preparatory work that has already commenced, Gaz-System’s statement reads.

Under the expansion project, the Polish terminal would see the construction of the second bay for loading and unloading LNG carriers as well as an LNG bunkering station.

Gaz-System’s president Tomasz Stępień said the expansion is a step towards the development of the LNG transshipment and bunkering market.

The decision to expand the terminal was taken following the results of a feasibility study submitted to Gaz-System at the end of August.

Once the expansion is complete it would enable the loading and unloading of small and medium-sized tankers as well as transshipment of LNG carriers.

The construction of the second bay will be supported by the EU funds for terminal expansion which is expected to be completed in 2021.

Gaz-System has already made a decision in April to increase the terminal’s handling capacity from 5 mtpa to 7 mtpa of LNG.
