Germany: Flensburger Launches Ferry ‘Seatruck Precision’

Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft today launched ferry “Seatruck Precision”. The ferry, the last of four newbuildings ordered at FSG for service in the Irish Sea, is for the shipping company Seatruck Ferries Ltd.

“As with Hull No. 751 – Seatruck Performance – the name of the latest ship also appears in keeping with the programme. That’s because precision is a quality feature of FSG and is just as typical of our work as being on deadline and in budget “, said shipyard Managing Director Peter Sierk. Happiness about that, however, is also tinged with a little sadness because the end of FSG’s work for Sea truck Ferries is now in sight.” Two of the four ordered ferries have left Flensburg in the last few months for the Irish Sea. The third ship leaves on April 12th and Seatruck Precision follows in summer”, Sierk added.

The English shipping company has been a strong and reliable partner of the FSG. Peter Sierk said “We value the respect we have for each other and we are happy that our cooperation has been so successful. But that is, after all, our ideal: the customer is in the same boat as us from the moment we first talk – not just a client but, rather, a part of the Flensburg family”.

These four ships are the most efficient and modern in the Seatruck fleet. At the same time they will also be the biggest ships to operate out of the northwest English port of Heysham. It was the size of this port that determined the length of the newbuildings – maximum 142 metres to allow for the greatest possible load and optimal manoeuverability in a port with only limited available space. That’s also why the deckhouse is located forward – to guarantee unhampered loading of the upper decks. As well as being 142 m long, the ferries are 25 m wide, boast a freight capacity of 2,166 lane metres on four decks and can carry up to 151 trailers.

FSG engineers have paid a lot of attention to eco-friendliness and low fuel consumption, as they do with all of their designs. FSG-designed ships consume up to 30 percent less fuel than traditional designs, which not only saves costs but also makes an enormous contribution to environmental protection.

FSG’s current order book ensures good employment for its workers well beyond the delivery of all four Seatruck ferries. At the moment it contains three RoRo freight ferries for Ulusoy in Turkey, a ConRo ship for Oceanex in Canada and two multi-functional heavy lift transport ships for Rolldock in Holland. The orders guarantee work and this also ensure employment until mid 2014. Other very promising projects to secure the jobs of Flensburg’s more than 700 workers, are being planned. In addition, the FSG is currently engaged in setting up its new Hamburg office, Flensburg Ship Design, which will employ about 40 further engineers from May.
