Germany Vying for Euro Cruise Market Top Spot

The ocean cruise market in Germany continues to be one of the fastest-growing tourism sectors, and with 1.77 million German passengers recorded in 2014, the country is on its way to become the second largest cruise market in the world, according to Norbert Fiebig, president of the German Travel Association (DRV).

The latest figures are the result of a survey entitled ”The 2014 ocean cruise market in Germany,” compiled in cooperation with the German affiliate Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA).

Michael Ungerer, chairman of the CLIA Germany, said that over the last ten years passenger numbers have tripled.

With 1.77 million customers and a total of 15.63 million overnights in 2014, a new passenger record for cruise tour operators was set.

In the years to come, further tourism products and new ships are expected, resulting in market growth of 43 percent.
