Gondan Shipyard launches first LNG tug built in Europe

Gondan Shipyard in Figueras, Spain, launched the first in a series of three tugs currently under construction for the Norwegian shipowner Østensjø Rederi.

The 40.2 meters long and 16 meters wide vessel, designed by the Canadian company Robert Allan, is the first dual-fuel tug built in Europe, the company said in a statement on Monday.

Once delivered, the tug will provide services to Statoil of Norway, at the Hammerfest LNG terminal located at Melkøya island. The delivery of the vessel is scheduled for 2017.

The vessel is designed to operate on liquefied natural gas in temperatures 20°C.

For the next few months, this new vessel will be moored at the yard´s quay while being outfitted until completion, when it will take on sea trials, Gondan Shipyard said.
