HHI, Lloyd’s Register to develop LNG-fueled bulker

South Korean Shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) joined forces with Lloyd’s Register to design 180,000 dwt class LNG-fueled bulk carriers.

LR and HHI note the new designs will cover the market needs using LNG as fuel, as they have been optimized for short to medium-haul bulk trade, such as Australia – Asia.

The designs will also be developed for the long-haul bulk trade, such as Brazil – Asia service in line with the Harmonised Common Structural Rules.

Following the introduction of the IMO’s NOx and SOx emission limitations, and increased developments in the global supply of gas, there is a continued need for ship designs to evolve to provide further alternatives to traditional oil-fuelled designs, the two companies said.

Expecting orders for larger size newbuilds, the duo selected a 180,000 dwt class bulk carrier for the design development project.
