Cost for Newport News sub may rise $520 million

Delays, extra expenses are cited as some of the projected setbacks. The price of a new attack submarine being built at the Northrop Grumman Newport News shipyard may cost taxpayers 24 percent more than originally expected. Navy documents obtained by The Daily Press show that the cost of Texas submarine, the second in a new class of nuclear-powered attack submarines, has risen to $2.71 billion. It’s $520 million more than the original 1999 estimate of $2.19 billion.
