Piracy On Somali Waters Still Troubling Shipping Industries

The number of reported incidents of piracy attacks, worldwide, remained at 127 same as 2005, according to the International Maritime Bureau(IMB). According to its armed robbery and piracy report, the IMB stated that 127 ships were attacked. 11 ships were hijacked, 156 crew members taken hostage, 13 kidnapped and 6 were killed.

In total eight attacks have been reported off the coast of Somalia were pirates armed with guns and grenades have attacked ships, fired upon them and held their crew members as hostages. The eastern and north eastern coasts of Somalia continue to be high-risk areas of hijackings.
