India interested in building LNG plant in Iran

India’s minister of state for petroleum and natural gas, Dharmendra Pradhan voiced the interest from Indian companies to invest in LNG projects in Iran during his recent meeting with Bijan Namdar Zanganeh, Iran’s minister of petroleum in Tehran.

According to the ministry statement, Pradhan said Indian companies could invest up to US$20 billion in various projects in Iran either through joint ventures between Indian and Iranian public sector companies or with private sector partners.

Pradhan requested Iran to allocate appropriate and adequate land in the Chabhar special economic zone in the seaport of Chah Bahar in southeastern Iran, where India is interested in setting up an LNG plant.

Additionally, Pradhan sought favourable treatment in the pricing of gas for India and also supply of rich gas at competitive price and on long-term basis for the life of the joint venture projects that Indian companies are interested in setting up.

Both parties agreed to further examine possible means of exporting gas from Iran, especially the LNG projects and through the proposed Iran-Pakistan-India pipeline.
