Indian Navy Airlifts 20 from Listing Freighter

The Indian Navy airlifted twenty crew members from a listing general cargo ship some 40 miles northwest off Mumbai today, an official from the country’s Ministry of Defence said.

The captain of the India-flagged freighter Jindal Kamakshi issued a distress signal at around midnight local time, saying that the vessel had developed a heavy list after being battered by bad weather and heavy rain.

The rescue teams initially attempted to improve the vessel’s stability, but with no success. The crew members requested to be rescued from the ship at around 7 am local time.

There have been no reports of any injuries or pollution from the listing ship thus far.

Jindal Kamakshi is a 2009-built, 9,107 dwt general cargo ship, managed by Mumbai-based Jindal Waterways Ltd.
