Italy: Palumbo Shipyard Completes M/V Bella Desgagnés

Palumbo Shipyard Completes M/V Bella Desgagnés

Palumbo Shipyard in Naples was entrusted by the Canadian Groupe Desgagnés for the completion of M/V Bella Desgagnés. The vessel was built at 60% by a Croatian Shipyard that went bankrupt.

Some of the biggest shipyards in the Mediterranean were called to bid for the Tender regarding her completion and finally Palumbo Group was the chosen one.

In a record time, Palumbo Shipyard succeeded in completing every system on board, under the supervision of Lloyd’s Register and Transport Canada surveyors, paying attention both to build the missing 40% and perfectioning the 60% already done.

Bella Desgagnés is an Ice and DP class vessel in compliance with Lloyd’s Register Classification standards and Canadian flag. The vessel is 97.10mt in length (LOA) with a GRT of 6,588 tons and it is powered with 4 Wartsila diesel electric generators, which power two KONCAR electric motors, giving propulsion to two azimuthal propellers.

The azimuthal propellers work together with two bow thrusters, which contribute to give the vessel an almost unlimited manoeuvrability. Each system could be managed in automatic or semi-automatic mode with the dynamic positioning system (DP class AM) or with the C Joy.

Following the harbor tests, conducted with assistance of all manufacturing companies involved, each system of the vessel was tested during seven-day sea trials in full load conditions.

On board there is also a Liebherr crane of 30tons with a beam of 35mt, which enables the ship to work independently amid loading/unloading containers operations.

With regard to passenger accommodation, the vessel is equipped with comfortable panoramic  rooms sheltered from the arctic climate, a gym, a restaurant, a Cafeteria, a recreation room, public showers and an equipped conference room. There are four different classes to choose, each of them with a different approach to the trip including a VIP lounge area.

After being completed, Bella Desgagnés left the Palumbo Shipyard in Naples on Friday 22nd of March 2013, heading towards Canada. The vessel will put in communication 12 ports on the bank of the St. Lawrence river, in the Québec zone, opening a way for 5 of them which still do not have any connection between each other.

Refits are core business of the group, which was established in Naples in 1967.

To date, besides building commercial vessels, the Group handles big refit work, full conversions of yachts and also Super Yachts building. Including the original refit and conversion facility located in the commercial port of Naples, the Group now has a super yacht construction facility in Naples, a commercial shipyard in Messina (Sicily) and two shipyards in Malta. Palumbo Shipyard manages 10 dry docks, 1 slipway, berths, mooring docks, warehouses, open equipped working area and storage areas.

The company is ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 14001:2004 certified.
