LNG Canada awards accommodation construction deals

Shell-led LNG Canada project in Kitimat, British Columbia has awarded accommodation contracts to Civeo and a joint venture between Atco and Bird Construction.

Civeo said in its statement it has been contracted to provide rooms and services from the company’s existing Sitka accommodations facility.

Civeo’s Sitka Lodge, located in Kitimat, British Columbia, has 646 rooms, with plans to expand to 1,100 rooms to support this contract. The contract is for an initial 18- month time period, with a minimum room commitment and options for extension of up to 36 months.

In accordance with this contract, LNG Canada will use the Sitka Lodge for the initial construction phases of the LNG Canada export terminal.

Civeo did, however, say it had canceled its joint venture with Bird Construction that was awarded a contract to design and build LNG Canada’s Cedar Valley Lodge in 2016.

After the final investment decision for LNG Canada’s LNG export terminal was deferred in 2016, and against a changing market backdrop over the last two and a half years, Civeo has made the strategic decision to begin outsourcing the manufacturing of accommodation units and close its manufacturing plant in Alberta, Canada, the company said in its statement.

In a separate statement, Atco, through its unit Atco Structures LNG, entered the joint venture with Bird Construction to design, engineer and construct a 4,500-person Cedar Valley Lodge. The facility will be built to house workers involved in the construction of LNG Canada’s natural gas liquefaction and export facility.

Design and engineering for the project is currently underway, with construction commencement planned for spring 2019.
