LNG tanks installed on Crowley’s ConRo ship

Crowley Maritime’s first of two LNG-powered ConRo ships currently being constructed at VT Halter Marine reached a milestone with the installation of three LNG fuel tanks.

Each tank is 110 feet long and has a diameter of 20.6 feet weighing in at 225 metric tons, the company said in an update, adding that the vessel will be able to perform two round-trip voyages between the vessel’s future ports of call, Jacksonville, Florida and San Juan, Puerto Rico before bunkering.

Both LNG-powered ConRo ships will be 219.5 meters long, 32.3 meters wide, have a deep draft of 10 meters, and an approximate deadweight capacity of 26,500 metric tons.

Main propulsion and auxiliary engines of the two vessels, named El Coquí and Taíno will be fueled by liquefied natural gas.

Ships, designed by Wartsila Ship Design together with Crowley’s Jensen Maritime, are scheduled for delivery in the second and fourth quarter 2017, respectively.
