Maersk Stops Oil Leak Near Rolf Platform, Offshore Denmark

Following an oil leak into the sea on Wednesday near the Rolf platform, Maersk Oil can report that based on observations from its boat and a helicopter flight this morning, that the leak has been stopped.

A vessel carrying floating boom barriers is arriving to the location this morning and a second one will arrive later in the day. The boom barriers will be deployed as a precautionary measure. A Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) will be deployed on Friday to investigate a stretch of pipeline between the Rolf and Gorm platforms to see whether there was a breach.

The Danish Energy Agency, the Danish Environmental Protection Agency and the Admiral Danish Fleet (SOK) are being updated on the situation.

Maersk Oil continues to monitor the situation closely. This status update is as of Thursday, 3 March 2011 at 10.00 CET.

Maersk Oil produces over 200,000 barrels a day in the North Sea. The Rolf platform produces 400 barrels of oil per day. The platform is linked to the Gorm platform by a 17 km long pipeline where oil from the Rolf platform is processed.
