Mainstay Splashes AMOG WEC Hull

Mainstay Marine Solutions has launched the hull of AMOG Consulting’s wave energy converter (WEC) technology demonstrator device.

The hull and keel were launched on Tuesday, July 9, 2019 from Mainstay Marine Solutions’ slipway at Pembrokeshire, Wales UK.

The milestone follows the construction contract announcement in March this year.

AMOG’s WEC design has undergone a robust testing regime to reach the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) and progress to testing at utility scale.

The device itself is said to be tuned to maximise the power from incoming waves by extracting energy from the motion of its pendulum structure. It is mechanically simple, can operate in a range of water depths, and has been designed for robustness, AMOG explains.

AMOG anticipates that by the end of summer 2019, the WEC technology demonstrator will be deployed and tested at the FaBTest site, a pre-consented wave energy device nursery situated within Falmouth harbor and administered by the Renewable Energy Group at University of Exeter and the Falmouth Harbour Commissioners.

The Phase 2 of the project has been enabled by the contribution of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and Marine-I.
