MOL takes delivery of Beidou Star LNG carrier

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines said on Thursday that Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding recently delivered the 171,800 cbm LNG carrier Beidou Star.

The vessel is the third in a series of four newbuild LNG carriers that will provide transportation services on long-term charter for ExxonMobil’s LNG interests in Papua New Guinea and Australia, MOL said in a statement.

The project of building the Beidou Star LNG carrier, marks the first time a foreign company used a Chinese shipyard and it was also the first time that PetroChina participated in an LNG transport project. MOL added that it was the first time China Shipping Company and PetroChina jointly acquired ownership in an LNG carrier.

The Beidou Star LNG carrier has a total length of 290 meters and width of 46.96 meters and is jointly owned by MOL (70 percent) and China Shipping Company and PetroChina’s JV, NCLSI (30 percent).
