MV Hoy Head Re-Enters Service after Extensive Modernisation

The Orkney Ferry ‘Hoy Head’ has re-entered service after an extensive re-fit and modernisation programme at Cammell Laird.

Lengthened by 13.8m and fitted with a new propulsion package comprising Volvo D16C-CMH main engines and Rolls Royce US 105 P9 CRP Z drive azimuthing thrusters the vessel achieved an increase in speed to 12.5 knots on trials.

The lengthening included an additional bow thruster, new azimuthing propeller units and improvements to the crew accommodation with larger stores, dry locker, galley and messing facilities. The work has increased the car capacity from 14 to 24 cars or for up to three 16.5m HGVs and 7 cars.

The vessel now has the highest load capacity in the Orkney Ferries fleet.
