New boss to join Heerema Marine Contractors from sister company

Dutch marine contractor Heerema Marine Contractors (HMC) has elected new chief executive officer of the company, which will be joining it from sister company Heerema Fabrication Group (HFG).

Koos-Jan van Brouwershaven, HMC's new CEO

In a statement last Friday, HMC said it had appointed Koos-Jan van Brouwershaven as its chief executive officer, starting June 1, 2018.

On the same day, Wijnand Tutuarima will join the Board of Heerema Marine Contractors as chief financial officer (CFO), thereby adding to the HMC one-tier board presently consisting of Pieter Heerema (chairman), Nico Pronk and Saskia Rijtema.

It is worth reminding that HMC’s former CEOJan-Pieter Klaver, left the company in June 2017 after an eight-year run as CEO and after over 26 years of working for Heerema. Klaver then in November 2017 took the position of CEO at offshore crane supplier Kenz Figee.

It is also worth mentioning that HMC’s previous CFO, Frans den Houter, resigned last April. Also in April, HMC announced its exit from offshore pipelay activities as a further step in its strategic transition, which resulted in a loss of 350 permanent jobs.

Van Brouwershaven stays as CEO of HFG

Koos-Jan van Brouwershaven joins HMC from sister company HFG where he has worked as chief executive officer since 2013. He will remain CEO of HFG as well, the company noted.

Koos-Jan van Brouwershaven started his career as a trainee at Heerema Offshore Services in 1986 and then joined Genius Offshore Services as a Field Engineer on a project in the Red Sea in Egypt. After holding management positions in the offshore industry he moved to mining company Harsco Metals & Minerals.

In 2005, he was appointed as managing director of the company in South Africa where he was responsible for 13 of Harsco’s sites. He joined Heerema Fabrication Group as CEO in 2013.

Wijnand Tutuarima, who joins the Board of HMC as CFO, joined the company in 2013. Prior to this appointment he held the position of Senior Vice President Finance at HMC and was a member of the management team of the company.

His career started in 1995 at the Global Shipping Group with Fortis MeesPierson where he was commercially responsible for the client portfolios in Central Europe and subsequently Asia, holding positions in Rotterdam and Singapore.

In 2005, Wijnand Tutuarima moved to Fortis Commercial Banking focusing on the development of the international network and setting up 5 new branches in Scandinavia and Asia. Hereafter, he was closely involved in the integration of the commercial banking activities of Fortis and ABN AMRO.

Following the merger, he became COO for the international private banking activities of the combined entity.

Pieter Heerema, chairman of the Board of Heerema Marine Contractors said: “I am delighted to bring Koos-Jan van Brouwershaven and Wijnand Tutuarima to our board. I am confident they will help lead our business through the current, significant changes in the industry working together with our colleagues in the areas of Heavy Lift, Decommissioning and Renewables.”
