New LNG Tank Put to the Test at Xiamen Shipyard

Xiamen Shipyard, along with the world’s leading classification societies (DNV GL, BV and ABS), have carried out tests on a new LNG containment system.

New LNG Tank Put to the Test at Xiamen Shipyard

Developed by LNG New Technologies (LNT) and based on the IMO IGC Code, the system named LNT A-BOX™ won an Approval in Principle (AiP) from DNV GL in mid-2013.

The system consists of an IMO independent tank type-A placed in an insulated hold space. It combines proven technologies in a new robust, safe and cost effective configuration.

As a result, the “LNT A-BOX™” offers top benefits:

  • From prismatic tanks: Good hull volume utilization and flat deck space.
  • From spherical tanks: Sloshing is not considered critical, so no operational restrictions on filling levels are expected.

LNT A-BOX has primarily been developed for seaborne LNG transport. The design is however, also an excellent choice for FSRU and FLNG applications, as well as medium to large scale combination carriers (LNG/LEG/LPG).

The development of LNT A-BOX™ has been supported by the Research Council of Norway and Innovation Norway.
