Nordic Yards Starts Construction of LK-25 Icebreaker

Nordic Yards has begun the construction of a steel deckhouse for Russian icebreaker LK-25, the future “Viktor Tschernomyrdin”.

The steel cutting ceremony, held at the shipbuilders Rostock-Warnemünde yard, marks the beginning of construction for the Project 22600.

The contract for the fabrication of the deckhouse as part of the icebreaker’s superstructure was concluded between the St. Petersburg Baltic Shipyard and Germany’s Nordic Yards back in August. The keel-laying for the icebreaker of Project 22600, took place at the Baltic Shipyard on October 10th 2012.

According to the terms of the contract, the deckhouse will weigh 2,500 tonnes and will be fully fitted out. The icebreaker will be equipped with a 25-megawatt (MW) diesel-electric propulsion system that will provide the vessel with the capability to break ice up to two metres thick and ensure the free passage of ships in and out of frozen harbour basins and along the Northern Sea Route. It will also find use on rescue and salvage missions under the Arctic conditions as well as on expeditions.

Delivery of the ship to the Russia’s state-owned seaports agency Rosmorport is planned for December 2015. The total cost of the project is around RUB 7.94 billion (about EUR 200 million).
