Norway - Green Tech Marine’s Scrubber Gets DNV Approval

Green Tech Marine’s compact exhaust gas scrubber, recently installed onboard Royal Caribbean International’s ‘Liberty of the Seas’, has received a Statement of Compliance certificate according to MARPOL regulations.

As representative for the flag state, DNV has issued certification that measurements of exhaust gas emission and wash water criteria are well below the required limits stated in the MEPC guideline 184(59). This, says the manufacturer, will ensure the vessel is compliant with the 0.1% sulphur limit in ECAs from 2015.

Norwegian firm Green Tech Marine reports that it has been working closely together with DNV in order to receive type approval for its GTM R15 under IMO requirements. Beyond removal of SOx and particles, the unit is claimed to provide a number of advantages over other scrubbers, including a small footprint requirement, low weight, capability for installation while the ship is in operation, and energy efficiency, requiring virtually no external chemicals.
