Odfjell Confirms Chemical Tanker Duo Order

Norwegian shipping and tank terminal company Odfjell has signed final shipbuilding contracts for the construction of two chemical tankers with Chinese shipbuilder Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding.

The tankers, which will have 40 stainless steel cargo tanks, will feature 38,000 dwt and a cargo capacity of about 45,000 cbm.

Both tankers will be prepared for dual fuel solution, Odfjell earlier said, adding that the capital commitments under the letter of intent, which also includes options, will be about USD 116 million.

The first vessel will be delivered in June 2020 and the following vessel three months later, according to the company.

The signing comes on the back of the letter of intent which the parties entered into in mid-March 2017.

In the fourth quarter of 2016, the shipping firm reached an agreement for the construction of four 49,000 dwt chemical tankers with 33 stainless steel cargo tanks at the same yard.

The 49,000 dwt vessels, which will have a cargo capacity of 54,600 cbm, were said to be the world’s largest stainless steel chemical tankers.

“Following this order and other commitments recently taken, most of our renewal needs for the ‘super segregators’ have been met,” Kristian Mørch, CEO of Odfjell SE, said.
