Oil & Gas UK: Call for Papers for Piper 25 Conference (UK)

Oil & Gas UK: Call for Papers for Piper 25 Conference

Oil & Gas UK has issued a call for papers to be presented at its major offshore safety conference next summer, which will mark the 25th anniversary of the Piper Alpha disaster.

Piper 25 will be a three-day event held at Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre from 18 to 20 June 2013. Starting with a key note speech from Lord Cullen who chaired the public inquiry into the disaster, it is aimed at bringing together people from across the oil and gas industry to reflect on the lessons learnt from the tragedy, review how far offshore safety has evolved since and to reinforce industry commitment to continuous improvement.

Topic-themed sessions on a full range of issues related to offshore oil and gas safety will run in parallel during the conference. Abstracts for papers to be presented are now being invited. Potential topics include, but are not confined to, safety management systems and control of work, major hazard management and safety technology, human and organizational factors and emergency preparedness and response. The deadline for abstracts is 30 November.

Robert Paterson, Oil & Gas UK’s health and safety director, said: “Oil & Gas UK has decided to mark the 25th anniversary of the Piper Alpha disaster with an event which will draw on the experiences of people with direct knowledge of Piper Alpha, as well as those with a wider offshore safety background from the UK and abroad. We are also keen to learn lessons from other industrial sectors where these may be applied to improving safety in the upstream oil and gas industry”

“Presenters of papers at the conference have the opportunity share their knowledge and expertise with delegates, highlight emerging issues in safety and promote debate over them so I encourage everyone to submit abstracts to the conference committee.”
