Onshore cable provider wanted for second Malta-Italy interconnector

InterConnect Malta, the company behind the second Malta to Italy interconnector, has issued a tender for the manufacture and installation of onshore cables for the project.

The tender is looking for a company to manufacture and install the onshore 245 kV and 145 kV cables, fiber optic cable and accessories for the electrical interconnector in an environmentally friendly manner.

The estimated contract value is €68 million.

The deadline for submitting applications for the tender is April 16 by 09:30 local time.

According to InterConnect Malta, the call for offers for the 99-kilometer subsea cable will be issued soon.

The IC2 interconnector will consist of a new ~118-kilometer-long 225 MW HVAC electrical cable interconnection through a submarine cable operating at 220 kV between Maghtab in Malta and Ragusa in Sicily to be laid in parallel to the existing HVAC cable link which was commissioned in 2015.

This second Malta-Sicily cable link is part of the Maltese Government’s future energy strategy for meeting the 2030 climate and energy targets and the longer-term decarbonization objectives. The start of operations is planned for the second quarter of 2026.

The Maltese Planning Authority in January gave approval for the project’s development permit.
