OPDR Extends Own Network on Iberian Peninsula

The Short Sea Shipping and Logistics company Oldenburg-Portugiesische Dampfschiffs-Rhederei (OPDR) continues to expand on the Iberian Peninsula: The new and fully owned OPDR offices in Cartagena and Bilbao will officially become operational as from tomorrow.

“We are where the cargo of our customers is”, says Fernando Muñoz, Managing Director of OPDR IBERIA in Spain. “Cartagena and Bilbao are two important gateways for our customers who make use of our Short Sea Shipping services as a green and cost-efficient alternative to trucking. We are very happy that we now have our own offices in both cities which enable us to further enhance our customer proximity.”

Antonio Sánchez Navarro leads the OPDR office in Cartagena while Ander Pascual Guruceta will become the Branch Manager of the OPDR office in Bilbao as from 28th October 2013. “I am very much looking forward to setting up customized services for our clients in the area of Cartagena and beyond”, says Antonio Sánchez Navarro. “I see a lot of potential especially in the reefer business. OPDR offers fast transit times for perishable cargo from Spain to the Northern Continent and has available state-of-the-art container equipment such as 45’ Pallet-Wide High Cube Reefer container.”

The opening of the office in Bilbao is in line with the recently launched Bilbao service where OPDR collaborates with Team Lines. Four OPDR vessels, each with a capacity of 700 TEU, are deployed on this weekly service which connects Bilbao with Felixstowe and Rotterdam within two to three transit days. “With the integration of Bilbao into our own network, we now cover all hub ports in Spain and Portugal,” says Fernando Muñoz. “The port of Bilbao is our major gateway for all our cargo flows coming via our own block train connections from Central and Northeast Spain and going towards Northern Europe. Of course we also offer transports coming from Northern Europe to Spain.”
