Pakistan imported 9 LNG cargoes since March

Energy-hungry Pakistan has received nine cargoes of LNG since it started importing the chilled gas in March this year.

“The FSRU Exquisite brought in six cargoes, while three cargoes subsequently came on a DES basis,” Sheikh Imran-ul-Haque, Chief Executive Officer of Engro Elengy told LNG World News late Monday.

According to Engro Elengy’s CEO, FSRU Exquisite, which is being used as the country’s first import terminal, is scheduled to receive two cargoes of the chilled gas in September.

Engro Elengy is operating the country’s first import terminal at Port Qasim with a capacity for regasification of up to 4.5 million tons of LNG per year.

Pakistan, which is experiencing a huge shortage of natural gas, is mainly using the fuel to fire up the country’s power plants as well as to reduce its reliance on importing furnace oil and diesel.

In order to fill the supply gap, Pakistan State Oil Company has earlier this year awarded a tender for four cargoes of LNG for delivery from July through October.

The company has also recently issued a tender to buy one LNG cargo for delivery on December 25-27.  PSO is seeking a cargo quantity of 143,000 cbm with the deadline for bid submissions set for October 15.

Pakistan is also reportedly in talks with the world’s largest LNG producer, Qatar, to sign a long-term supply agreement which would help the country to overcome its energy crisis. According to reports, the LNG deal is expected to be signed by October.
