According to Petrofac, the contract is for one year, with an extension option. The Joint Venture will support work at the Absheron offshore natural gas field, located in the Caspian Sea, approximately 100 kilometers south of Baku. Gas at Absheron was first discovered in 2011.

SOCAR and Total each have a 50% interest in the field. SOCAR’s semi-submersible drilling rig Heydar Aliyev completed drilling of a first well earlier this year.

Petrofac did not provide financial details of the contract, nor on the nature of the joint venture with Socar who is at the same time a stakeholder at Absheron.
