Petronas: roofs raised on RGT2 LNG storage tanks

Malaysian energy giant, Petronas completed the roof-raising for the two LNG storage tanks at the liquefied natural gas regasification terminal 2 (RGT2), at the Pengerang Integrated Complex in Johor.

“Two steel dome structures were pneumatically raised to a height meters closing the most critical activity in the LNG tank construction towards reaching full completion,” the company said in a statement.

Following the completion of the roof-raising operation, RGT2 project director Shah Mahmood noted that the latest achievement is a step towards the expected commencement of commercial operations by the fourth quarter of 2017.

In addition, it brings the PIC project closer to its expected start-up in 2019.

Both LNG tanks are 88 metres in diameter with roof structures that reach 11.73 metres high and weigh 1,040.1 tons. The roofs were assembled at ground level inside the respective chambers during the early stages of the tanks’ construction, while their walls were constructed concurrently.

The air-raising of each roof took about 3 hours respectively, the company’s statement reads.

The RGT2, being developed by Pengerang LNG, a joint venture between Petronas, Dialog Group and the Johor State, is designed and developed to offer LNG unloading and reloading, storage, handling and regasification, with a capacity of 3.5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa).

The two LNG tanks, each with 200,000-cbm storage capacity, will enable the facility to provide primary gas supply to the Pengerang Cogeneration Plant (PCP) and other facilities within the PIC.
