Polar Research Vessel Reaches Stricken Sparta in Ross Sea

As part of the repair operations, fuel transferring to Sparta has been initiated.

The Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand (RCCNZ) has confirmed the ice-strengthened polar research vessel Araon has arrived at the site of the stricken vessel Sparta in the Ross Sea.

The prospect of the operation is to change Sparta’s trim so that the bow rises clear of the water, revealing the damaged area of hull. Currently, the impaired part of Sparta, a 30cm hole is 1.5m below the water line.

Should the repair prove to be successful, Sparta will be accompanied by Araon to open water.
