Prysmian Completes 66 kV Submarine Cable System Testing

Italian cable specialist Prysmian has finalized the electrical type tests on its 66 kV complete submarine cable system.

The tests were carried out according to CIGRE and IEC testing protocols, the company said.

The tested solution, which also includes factory, field joints and click-fit terminations, combines the use of EPR insulation with the wet design and aluminium conductors.

Prysmian said that “the success in the qualification of 66 kV system will provide the necessary confidence to offshore wind developers to step the intra-array system voltage up from the typical 33 kV to 66 kV.”

Furthermore, the company believes “this will ensure a significant reduction in Levelized Cost Of Electricity and a higher competitiveness of future wind energy systems.”
