Qatar: Maersk Oil, TNO Team Up in Developing Ways to Boost Oil Recovery

Today, Maersk Oil announced that it has established a long term collaboration agreement with TNO to jointly develop new technologies for increased oil recovery (IOR). Focus will be on long horizontal wells and increasing oil recovery through integrated operations and production optimisation. The joint research project will be located at the Qatar Science and Technology Park in Doha where both Maersk Oil and TNO have research centers.

“Maersk Oil has an ambition to become a leading oil and gas company within increased and enhanced oil recovery. By bringing together our and TNO’s experienced people, we create a research environment that will develop groundbreaking IOR technologies taking our oil recovery to a new level,” said Lewis Affleck, Managing Director, Maersk Oil Qatar.

“Development of new technologies asks for combining a thorough understanding of the industry with science and technology,” adds Anton Leemhuis, Managing Director, Qatar branch TNO. “TNO has successfully been doing this together with major international oil companies, for example, by developing and implementing intelligent production monitoring and control systems that optimise field production.”

Maersk Oil is investing USD 100 million in its research facility at the Qatar Science and Technology Park. Creating a world class research centre in the Qatar Science and Technology Park will also support Qatar’s 2030 National Vision under HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani.

“Mastering increased and enhanced oil recovery is key to unlocking future hydrocarbons in tight reservoirs. Our state of the art research centre forms the base for our efforts to better understand the opportunities and limitations in the Al Shaheen field in Qatar. This enlarged insight into the reservoirs will enable us to optimise our production while providing sustainable long-term benefits to the Qatari people,” said Lewis Affleck.
