Reef Subsea Completes First Contract for Q1000

Reef Subsea today announced that its subsidiary company, Reef Subsea Power & Umbilical Ltd., with offices in Stockton on Tees and Aberdeen, has completed its first contract for the recently launched Q1000 Trenching ROV.

The contract, for Lincs Offshore Wind Ltd. – a joint venture between UK energy company Centrica Energy, DONG Energy and Siemens Projects Ventures – saw Reef Subsea Power & Umbilical trench and bury a small number of array cable ends on the Lincs offshore wind farm at the end of 2012.

Earlier last year, Reef Subsea Power & Umbilical (RSPU) installed a series of high-voltage array cables on the Lincs wind farm using the MD3 cable plough. This new scope of work required RSPU to carry out an onsite trial and then the burial of a few pre-laid cable ends at the site, located 8km off the Lincolnshire coastline. Reef Subsea Power & Umbilical used its new Q1000 Trenching ROV on the project, which was mobilised on-board the Reef Despina.

The Q1000 has the ability to manoeuvre close to the turbine foundation using its sophisticated control and measurement system, enabling burial of the array cable in close proximity of the j-tube bellmouth. Reef Subsea Power & Umbilical also provided all onshore and offshore project management and engineering during the 14 day workscope.

The Q1000 is a modern free flying ROV jet trencher, which can operate in water depths up to 2,000 metres and in a variety of soil conditions. The trencher has 1000hp installed power and is ideally suited to the burial of rigid and flexible pipelines, umbilicals and cables for multiple market sectors.

Tim Sheehan, Chief Operating Officer of Reef Subsea, said: “The completion of this maiden contract for the Q1000 is a great step forward for Reef Subsea as we believed we made the right choice in investing in this asset to serve both Oil & Gas and Renewables clients. This new high-tech trenching ROV has the potential to serve markets worldwide.”

Daryl Lynch, Managing Director of Reef Subsea Power & Umbilical, added: “We are extremely proud to have been awarded repeat work on the Lincs wind farm for Lincs Offshore Wind Limited. As well as this, it is the first award for the Q1000, which will allow us to demonstrate the capabilities of this trenching ROV. Between this and past success of contracts for other wind farm projects, we look forward to building up our reputation as the best in our field.”
