Rolls-Royce engines for Doeksen LNG-powered catamarans

Rolls-Royce and the Singaporean shipyard Strategic Marine on Wednesday signed a contract at SMM in Hamburg for two new LNG-powered catamarans for the Dutch shipping company Doeksen.

The two 70-metre long aluminium catamarans will each receive two MTU 16-cylinder pre-production Series 4000 gas engines, each delivering around 1,500 kW, as the main propulsion system.

The IMO Tier III compliant engines will deliver power to azimuth fixed pitch propellers, giving the ferries an operational speed of 14 knots, according to Rolls-Royce.

The RoPax ferries, being built by Strategic Marine in Vietnam, will operate in the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Wadden Sea between Harlingen on the mainland and the islands of Terschelling and Vlieland.
