TGS gets the ball rolling across three continents

Some ten days after the announcement of a strategic collaboration agreement with Allton for accelerating the deployment of innovative deepwater ocean-bottom node (OBN) technology, Norwegian energy data and intelligence company TGS has reported updates from three countries, namely Norway, Ghana and Canada.

TGS reported today, July 22, that it had started the Orphan3D PSDM Phase 2 reprocessing project offshore Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, which will upgrade approximately 13,300 km2 of 3D seismic data across one of the most prospective exploration regions in the North Atlantic.

The aim of the project is to enhance imaging quality and subsurface understanding across the area, helping exploration companies evaluate opportunities within the basin more effectively.

Early products are expected to be available during 2027, with final migrated volumes scheduled for delivery in the third quarter of next year.

Jim Keating, CEO of Oil and Gas Corporation of Newfoundland and Labrador, said: “Continued investment in geoscience data is essential to advancing understanding of the Newfoundland and Labrador offshore and maintaining the region’s position as a globally competitive exploration jurisdiction. This reprocessing project will provide industry with enhanced subsurface insights in the Orphan Basinthat support prospect evaluation and informed investment decisions.”

In another statement issued the same day, TGS announced the Atlantic Margin South Reprocessing project in the Norwegian Sea, which covers over 23,000 km2 of 3D data over this part of the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS), described as underexplored.

The processing will be performed in stages, with interim early-out products available in Q3 2026 and seamless full integrity volume available in Q2 2027.

“As the industry sharpens it’s exploration efforts in more frontier basins, this dataset will enable E&P companies to reveal and derisk new prospectivity in this gas-prone volcanic basin. We are very pleased to secure funding and support for evergreening the multi-client 3D data in this part of the Norwegian continental shelf,” said Kristian Johansen, CEO of TGS.

This comes as the Norwegian firm signed an agreement with Ghana’s Petroleum Commission to create a new offshore 2D-cubed project across the Keta Basin.

Phase 1 of the Gulf of Guinea 2D-cubed will use 5,500 km2 of 3D data and over 14,700 kilometers of 2D data from multiple surveys as input to create a 25,300 km2 2D-cubed project spanning both the shelf and deepwater areas of the Keta Basin. Final products are expected in Q1 2027.
