Russian-flagged research vessel Professor Gagarinskiy carrying 40 people onboard is adrift off central Sakhalin Island shoreline, the Okhotsk sea after a shaft bearing broke down on Friday, August 1.

 
Salvage tug Grif was sent out to assist the drifting vessel and tow it to Vladivostok.

The tug transited La Perouse Strait on August 4.

The research vessel Professor Gagarinskiy, built in 1987, is owned by the Russian Department of Marine Research Fleet.

Its operating area covers the far east of Russia and South-Eastern Asia and it can spend 32 days at sea.
