Scottish oil worker shot dead in Brazil

An oil worker from Scotland has been killed in a carjacking attempt in Rio de Janerio, Brazil.

According to the Aberdeen-based Press and Journal, a Diamond Offshore employee Peter Campsie, 48, from Angus, Scotland was shot dead in a municipality of Niteroi, Wednesday, April 2, as two robbers tried to steal his Lexus.

The incident happened while Campsie, who had lived in Rio de Janerio for 16 years with his family, was returning home from a business meeting.

Levels of crime and violence are high in Brazil, particularly in major cities. According to data found on the UK government’s website, violence and crime can occur anywhere in Brazil, and often involve firearms or other weapons.

The government advises British nationals to be ready to hand over valuables if they are threatened, and to avoid attempts to resist attackers. They may be armed and under the influence of drugs.

Thefts from cars are common, and cases of carjacking occur.

“When approaching your car have the keys ready to make it easier to get into the car. When driving, keep doors locked and windows closed, and take particular care at traffic lights. In three or more lanes of traffic, consider using the middle lanes. Avoid deserted or poorly lit places, except under reliable local advice,” reads Foreign travel advice for Brazil, by the UK government.
