Shipyard Explosion Kills Two, China

Two people have been killed and two injured in today’s gas explosion at Huarun Dadong Dockyard Co. on Chongming Island, officials say.

Sparks produced by a worker using a grinder ignited leaking flammable gas in a manufacturing workshop and caused the accident, ShanghaiDaily reports.

The report further said that the ship is being built for Girocantex Sociedad Anonima, a branch of Brazilian firm HDB (Hidrovias do Brasil) which signed a deal with Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co Ltd to buy 128 iron ore barges.

The safety authorities are on the scene and investigating the accident.
