SNAME Recognizes Outstanding Accomplishments (USA)

The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) will recognize three individuals for their outstanding accomplishments in the marine field and ship research and achievements in naval architecture, marine engineering or ocean engineering. The annually awarded medals will be presented at the SNAME Banquet, on Thursday, October 25, 2012, held in conjunction with the SNAME 2012 Annual Meeting and Expo in Providence, Rhode Island.

THE VICE ADMIRAL “JERRY” LAND MEDAL for outstanding accomplishment in the marine field will be presented to Frederick J. Harris, President of General Dynamics NASSCO. Mr. Harris is regarded as one of the most progressive and innovative shipbuilders in the United States and a true leader in the industry. His willingness to seek out new methods of production and his recognition of the need to reach out to international shipbuilders to learn and apply best business practices has made NASSCO one of the most efficient shipyards in the U.S. Throughout his career, Mr. Harris has worked tirelessly in support of those issues important to maintain a strong U.S. maritime industry.

THE DAVID W. TAYLOR MEDAL for notable achievement in naval architecture and/or marine engineering will be presented to Kirsi K. Tikka President and COO of the ABS Europe Division. The Division is responsible for the day-to-day operations of ABS throughout Scandinavia, Northern and Southern Europe, the British Isles, the wider Mediterranean region and Africa. Her prior assignment was Vice President and Chief Engineer where she led ABS Environmental Solutions Group whose innovative solutions support environmental initiatives and maritime operations in harsh environments.

Before joining ABS in 2001, Dr. Tikka was professor of Naval Architecture at Webb Institute in New York. In addition to teaching she carried out research on the structural strength of tankers and risk analysis and was actively involved in the US National Research Council Marine Board studies on double hull tankers. She has also worked for Chevron Shipping in San Francisco and for Wartsila Shipyards in Finland.

THE DAVIDSON MEDAL for outstanding scientific accomplishment in ship research will be presented to Arthur M. Reed. Dr. Reed has spent his entire career working for the U.S. Navy at the David Taylor Model Basin—starting as a Naval Architect in 1974 and advancing to his present position of Senior Research Scientist/Technical Consultant for High-Speed Ship Hydrodynamics. He has been involved in and served as Technical Director for many projects including SWATH ships, propeller design, the SEA SHADOW, hull-form optimization, and most recently DDG 1000 hull form development.

The common thread in all of these accomplishments is the development and application of state-of-the-art marine hydrodynamics in ship design.

The 2012 William M. Kennedy and Elmer L. Hann Awards will be presented at the President’s Luncheon on Friday, October 26, 2012, along with the presentation of the ABS-Linnard Prize, the Vice Admiral E. L. Cochrane Award, the Faculty Advisor of the Year Award, the 50-Year Golden Membership Certificates, Certificates of Appreciation, Student Paper Awards, the ASNE/SNAME 2012 Dr. James A. Lisnyk Design Competition Awards and the MARAD/SNAME Student Design Competition Awards.
